1. About your website

This becomes the title and summary AI tools read first.

Used to turn short paths like /services/ into full links.
Plain sentences or bullet points. Don’t use headings here.

2. Important pages

Group your best pages into sections. Add a short note so AI tools know what each page covers.

Paste a list of URLs instead
Titles are created from each URL. You can edit them after.

3. Your llms.txt file

Updates live as you type.

Upload the file to the root of your domain so it opens at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. llms.txt is a proposed standard (llmstxt.org). It helps AI tools understand your site, but no AI company guarantees it will be used.

    What is an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt file is a plain text file, written in Markdown, that sits at the root of your website (for example, yourdomain.com/llms.txt). It gives large language models (LLMs) and AI assistants a short, organised summary of your site and a list of the pages that matter most.

Think of it as a guided tour for AI. A normal web page is full of menus, cookie banners, scripts, ads and layout code. People skip past all of that without thinking, but an AI tool reading your site has to process it, and it only has limited room (its “context window”) to do so. llms.txt removes the noise. It says: here is who we are, here is what we do, and here are the pages worth reading.

The format was proposed by Jeremy Howard in September 2024 and is documented at llmstxt.org. It is still a proposal rather than an official web standard, but many websites, documentation platforms and SEO plugins have started adding it.

Why your website needs an llms.txt file

More and more people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews for answers instead of clicking through ten blue links. When those tools answer, they pull information from websites. If an AI tool misunderstands your business, it may describe you wrongly, recommend a competitor, or skip you completely.

An llms.txt file helps with that in a few ways:

    • It explains your business in your own words. The summary at the top is the first thing an AI tool reads, so you control the description.
    • It points to your best content. Instead of an AI tool guessing which pages matter, you list them, with a short note about what each one covers.
    • It saves the AI tool effort. A small, clean text file is far easier to process than dozens of full HTML pages.
    • It prepares you for AI search (GEO). Generative Engine Optimization is about making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite. llms.txt is one of the simplest first steps.
    • It costs nothing. Creating the file takes a few minutes, and it doesn’t affect your normal Google rankings or how visitors see your site.

It’s important to be realistic too. No major AI company has officially confirmed that it reads llms.txt when answering questions. It is a low-effort, low-risk step that may help, not a guaranteed ranking factor. Good content, clear site structure and strong traditional SEO still matter most.

Features of our free llms.txt generator

We built this tool to make creating a correct llms.txt file quick, even if you have never written Markdown before.

    • Guided form: Fill in your site name, summary and key facts. The tool handles the Markdown formatting for you.
    • Live preview: Your llms.txt file updates instantly as you type, so you always see exactly what you’ll get.
    • Sections and links: Group your pages into sections such as Services, Products, Guides or About, and add a short note to each link.
    • “Optional” section support: The llms.txt format has a special section called “Optional” for less important pages that AI tools can skip. One click adds it, and the tool always places it at the end.
    • Short paths turned into full URLs: Enter your website address once and type links like /services/. The tool converts them into full, absolute URLs.
    • Bulk URL import: Paste a list of URLs and the tool creates page titles from them automatically. You can edit them afterwards.
    • Built-in format checks: The tool warns you about missing titles, broken or incomplete URLs, duplicate links, empty sections and links without notes.
    • Copy or download: Copy the file to your clipboard or download a ready-to-upload llms.txt file.
    • Private by design: Everything runs in your browser. We don’t store or send your content anywhere.

    How the llms.txt generator works

The tool follows the structure described in the llms.txt proposal. A valid file contains these parts, in this order:

    1. An H1 title (a line starting with #) with the name of your site or project. This is the only required part.
    2. A short summary in a blockquote (a line starting with >). One or two sentences that explain what your site is about.
    3. Optional details in plain paragraphs or bullet points, with no headings. Useful for key facts, rules or things the AI should know.
    4. Sections with H2 headings (lines starting with ##), each containing a list of links in the format Page name: short note.

Here is a small example of what the output looks like:

    # SERP High

    > SERP High is an SEO agency that helps businesses grow organic traffic with technical SEO, content and local SEO.

    ## Services

    - [SEO Services](https://serphigh.com/services/): Full list of SEO services we offer
    - [Contact](https://serphigh.com/contact/): How to book a free consultation

    ## Optional

    - [Blog](https://serphigh.com/blogs/): SEO guides and industry news

As you type, the generator cleans up extra spaces, removes headings from the details area (the format doesn’t allow them there), turns relative links into full URLs, drops empty sections and moves the “Optional” section to the end. The checklist next to the preview tells you if anything still needs attention.

How to use the tool, step by step

    1. Enter your website or brand name. This becomes the H1 title.
    2. Add your website address, for example https://yourdomain.com. This lets you use short paths for your links.
    3. Write a one-sentence summary. Say what you do, who you serve and where. Keep it factual, not salesy.
    4. Add extra details if useful. For example opening hours, service areas, what you don’t offer, or how pricing works.
    5. Add your important pages. Create sections, add a title and URL for each page, and write a short note about what it covers. Aim for your 10 to 30 most useful pages, not every page on your site.
    6. Check the checklist. Fix anything marked with a red cross, and consider the warnings.
    7. Copy or download the file and upload it to your site.

How to add llms.txt to your website

The file must be reachable at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, in the root of your domain, just like robots.txt.

    • Any website with file access: Upload llms.txt to your root folder (often called public_html) using your hosting file manager or FTP.
    • WordPress: Upload the file to the root folder through your hosting control panel’s file manager. Some SEO plugins can also create and serve llms.txt for you.
    • Shopify, Wix, Squarespace and other hosted builders: Root file uploads are often limited. Check your platform’s help pages or apps for llms.txt support.

After uploading, open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in your browser. If you see your text, it’s working.

Tips for writing a great llms.txt file

    • Be clear and specific. “Family-run bakery in Dhaka delivering custom cakes” is far more useful than “We are passionate about quality.”
    • Write useful link notes. A short note like “Prices, sizes and how to order” helps an AI tool pick the right page for a question.
    • Link to your most helpful pages. Service pages, product categories, pricing, FAQs, guides and contact pages usually matter most.
    • Leave out thin or private pages. Skip login pages, carts, tag archives and anything you wouldn’t want quoted.
    • Keep it up to date. When you launch a new service or change important details, update the file.
    • Use Markdown versions if you have them. The proposal suggests offering clean .md versions of key pages. If your site has them, link to those.

    llms.txt vs robots.txt vs sitemap.xml

These three files are often confused, but each has a different job:

    • robots.txt tells crawlers which parts of your site they may or may not access. It’s about permission.
    • sitemap.xml lists all the URLs you want search engines to find and index. It’s about discovery.
    • llms.txt gives AI tools a short, human-readable summary of your site and its key pages. It’s about understanding.

You don’t have to choose one. Most sites should have all three.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is llms.txt an official standard?

No. It is a proposed format published at llmstxt.org in 2024. It is widely discussed and increasingly adopted, but it is not an official web standard and no AI company is required to follow it.

Will llms.txt improve my Google rankings?

No, it’s not a Google ranking factor. Its purpose is to help AI tools understand your content. Your normal SEO work (quality content, technical health and links) is still what drives rankings.

Does ChatGPT or Google actually read llms.txt?

At the time of writing, no major AI company has officially confirmed that it uses llms.txt when answering questions. Some AI tools and coding assistants do use it when given a site to read. Creating one is quick and harmless, so many site owners add it to be ready.

Can llms.txt block AI bots from my site?

No. llms.txt only provides information. To allow or block AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot, use rules in your robots.txt file.

How many links should I include?

Focus on quality. For most business websites, 10 to 30 of your most important pages is plenty. Use the “Optional” section for extra pages that are nice to have.

Is this llms.txt generator really free?

Yes. The tool is completely free, has no limits and needs no sign-up. It runs entirely in your browser, so your content stays private.
