What is traffic value?

Traffic value is an estimate of how much your organic (unpaid) search traffic would cost if you bought the same clicks through Google Ads.

Traffic value = Organic clicks × Cost per click (CPC)

If your website gets 8,000 organic visitors a month from keywords where advertisers pay an average of 2.50 per click, your traffic is worth about 20,000 per month, or 240,000 a year. That’s the ad budget you would need to get the same visitors from paid search.

Many popular SEO tools show a “traffic value” or “traffic cost” metric for this reason. It turns a traffic number into something everyone understands: money.

Why traffic value matters

Traffic numbers on their own can be misleading. 1,000 visits from people searching “what is SEO” are worth much less to a business than 100 visits from people searching “hire SEO agency”. Traffic value accounts for that, because keywords with buying intent usually have much higher CPCs.

Calculating traffic value helps you:

  • Show the value of SEO. “Our organic traffic is worth 20,000 a month in ad spend” is a strong argument when you’re asking for an SEO budget.
  • Compare SEO and paid ads fairly. You can see how much you’d have to spend on ads to replace your organic traffic.
  • Find your most valuable keywords. A small keyword with a high CPC can be worth more than a big keyword with a low one.
  • Protect what you have. If one keyword brings a large share of your traffic value, losing that ranking would be expensive. Keep that page strong.
  • Track progress. Traffic value that grows month after month shows your SEO is bringing in more valuable visitors, not just more visitors.

  • Branded traffic filter: Exclude a share of branded searches for a more conservative value.
  • 12-month projection: Add an expected monthly growth rate and see your projected traffic value for the next year on a chart.
  • Several currencies: USD, EUR, GBP, BDT, INR, AUD, CAD and AED.
  • Private: All calculations happen in your browser.

How the traffic value calculator works

Quick estimate:

  1. Clicks counted = Monthly organic visitors × (1 − Branded traffic %)
  2. Monthly traffic value = Clicks counted × Average CPC
  3. Yearly value = Monthly value × 12

Keyword mode:

  1. Each keyword’s value = Monthly organic clicks × That keyword’s CPC
  2. Total value = The sum of all keyword values, minus any branded share you exclude
  3. The average CPC shown is your total value divided by your total clicks, so it’s weighted by traffic

12-month projection: The tool grows your monthly value by the growth rate you enter, month after month, and adds up the next 12 months.

Example: In keyword mode, “seo services” brings 420 clicks a month at a CPC of 6.80, which is worth 2,856 a month. “What is seo” brings 1,500 clicks, but at a CPC of 0.90 it’s worth only 1,350. The smaller keyword is worth more than twice as much, because the people searching it are ready to buy.

How to use the tool, step by step

Quick estimate:

  1. Open Google Search Console, go to Performance, and note your total clicks for the last 28 days. Or use organic search sessions from Google Analytics.
  2. Find a typical CPC for your main keywords in Google Keyword Planner. Use the “Top of page bid” range as a guide.
  3. Enter both numbers and choose your currency.

Keyword mode (more accurate):

  1. In Search Console, export your top queries with their clicks.
  2. Find the CPC for each query in Google Keyword Planner.
  3. Paste them into the tool, one per line: keyword, monthly clicks, CPC.
  4. Review the table to see which keywords carry most of your value.

Tip: Write numbers without thousand separators (1500, not 1,500), because commas separate the columns.

Traffic value vs revenue: an important difference

Traffic value is not the money your website earns. It tells you what the same clicks would cost to buy as ads. Your real revenue depends on how well your website turns those visitors into customers.

To estimate the actual revenue SEO brings in, use our SEO ROI Calculator, which includes your conversion rate and order value.

Traffic value is also an estimate because:

  • CPCs change with competition, season, location and device.
  • Not every click is equal. Some visitors would never have clicked an ad.
  • Branded traffic is different. People searching your brand name would probably find you anyway, and branded CPCs are often low. That’s why the tool lets you exclude branded traffic.
  • Ad costs depend on your account. Google’s auction also considers Quality Score, so two advertisers can pay different prices for the same keyword.

How to increase your traffic value

  • Target commercial keywords. Keywords with buying intent (“price”, “hire”, “best”, “near me”, “service”) have higher CPCs and bring more valuable visitors.
  • Improve rankings for keywords where you’re on page one but not in the top 3. Moving up a few spots can multiply clicks. Our CTR and Traffic Estimator shows how much.
  • Create pages for valuable topics you don’t cover yet. Look at the keywords your competitors pay for, and build helpful content around them.
  • Protect your top pages. Keep your most valuable pages updated, fast and well linked from the rest of your site.
  • Improve click-through rate. Better titles and descriptions bring more clicks from the same rankings.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good traffic value?

There’s no universal number. It depends on your industry and size. The most useful comparison is with yourself: is your traffic value growing month after month? You can also compare it with your SEO budget. If your traffic value is much higher than what you spend, SEO is delivering strong value.

Where do I find CPC data for free?

Google Keyword Planner, inside Google Ads, is free to use. Look at the “Top of page bid” columns for each keyword. Many SEO tools also show CPC estimates.

Why is my traffic value different from what other SEO tools show?

Other tools estimate your traffic from their own ranking data, which can be quite different from reality. This calculator uses your real clicks from Search Console or Analytics, so it’s usually more accurate for your own site.

Should I include branded traffic?

For a conservative value, exclude most of it. People searching your brand name would likely find you without SEO, and they could also be reached cheaply with branded ads.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It’s free, has no limits and doesn’t need a sign-up. Your data never leaves your browser.
