For any business people search for with a location attached, the local pack is the most valuable position on the page. It sits above the organic results, it shows ratings and distance, and most people never scroll past it.
What local ranking actually depends on
- Relevance: whether your profile and site clearly match what was searched.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the location they named.
- Prominence: how well known and well reviewed you are, online and off.
Distance is the one you cannot change, which is why the other two deserve disproportionate effort.
Get the profile right first
- Choose the most specific primary category that fits, then add secondary categories only where they genuinely apply.
- Complete every field, including service areas, hours, attributes and a real description.
- Add photographs regularly; profiles that look maintained perform better than ones that look abandoned.
- Use a local phone number and an address format that matches your other listings exactly.
Consistency across the web
Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear, down to the abbreviations. Inconsistent listings across directories make it harder for search engines to be confident they are describing one business.
Reviews, handled properly
Reviews influence both ranking and the decision to click. Ask every satisfied customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to all of them, including the critical ones. Never buy reviews or write them yourself: platforms detect it, customers detect it, and the penalty is worse than the problem it was meant to solve.
Location pages that earn their place
If you serve several areas, a page per area can work, but only if each one says something specific: the work you have done there, the team who cover it, the conditions particular to that place. Pages generated by swapping a place name into a template are thin content, and they are treated as such.
Local links still count
Sponsorships, local press, chambers of commerce, community groups and supplier directories all produce links that are hard for a distant competitor to replicate, and they tend to come with actual customers attached.
